EducationDr. Goel received his B.A. in Neuroscience with a minor in Music Technology from Northwestern University. He subsequently received his M.D. from the Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York, where he was inducted into the Arnold P. Gold Humanism Honors Society and was recognized with several awards for his work to address disparities in minority health. After medical school, Dr. Goel completed his psychiatric residency at the Payne Whitney Clinic at New York Presbyterian - Weill Cornell, where he served as Chief Resident of both Education and the department’s D.E.I. program.
AreaS of ExpertiseDr. Goel works collaboratively with patients to clarify their goals. He approaches care holistically while helping his patients identify personal strengths, discover purpose, and cultivate healthy relationships. He is highly attuned to questions of identity, belonging, multicultural experience, and the impact of sociopolitical factors on mental health.
Treatments include psychotherapy (talk therapy) and/or pharmacotherapy (medication management) based on each individual’s needs and preferences. He utilizes several psychotherapeutic approaches including short and long term psychodynamic psychotherapy, intensive short-term dynamic psychotherapy (ISTDP), and cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT). His flexible approach allows treatment methods to change and evolve in response to shifting needs.
Outside of individual clinical work, Dr. Goel also facilitates process groups for community advocates, provides psychiatric care to unhoused individuals in New York City, and provides expert psychiatric consultation to legal and health policy teams.
